It’s hard to believe it’s February already! Despite the best of intentions each of us had at the strike of midnight on January 1st, it’s by this time of year that our resolutions begin to fade. Aspirations give way to excuses, indecision and objection.
Is this pattern sounding familiar to you?
For those in business without defined goals, a new year full of promise is quickly overwhelmed by the challenges of limiting budgets, emerging competitors and changing technologies.
Within your own horse business, can you think of times when this has happened?
- Have you pulled advertising because your cashflow slowed?
- Have you made a decision based on what a new competitor is doing?
- Have you relied heavily on third party platforms over which you have little control?
In this environment, decisions at all levels — from management to marketing — are made not with a long-term view, but in response to an immediate, and often short-lived, threat.
However, success isn’t found in knee jerk reactions, but in well planned decisions.
As proponents of social psychology — and simply good decision-making — say: don’t make a permanent decision based on temporary emotions. The same can be said for making resolutions.
The Resolution for Success
Every day, I work with equine business owners who aspire for success. The question I ask of them, which I’ll now ask you is: “Which is more important, immediate or sustained success?”
Those who opt for long-term success not only make resolutions, but actually stick with them.
As 2018 unfolds, it’s time to re-visit the resolutions you’ve set for your horse business and determine if you’re willing to commit to them, even when challenges arise.
When setting your goals for the year ahead, ask yourself and your team:
- What is the goal?
- When will the goal be achieved?
- How will its achievement impact on the business?
- Why is this goal important?
Beyond the bottomline, resolutions made for sustained success have far-reaching positive effects. Now it’s your turn to make your resolutions work for your horse business in 2018.
